Spotlight: StriveTogether and United Way of Salt Lake

StriveTogether and United Way of Salt Lake joined together to convene an impact and improvement network of school and community stakeholders from three school districts to tackle chronic absenteeism in grades K-3. They were recognized with the 2018 Spotlight on Quality in Continuous Improvement for the work of that network.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, StriveTogether and United Way of Salt Lake collaborated to convene a network that used tools and techniques for continuous improvement to learn and develop strategies for reducing chronic absenteeism in their communities. From the 2018 Spotlight on Quality in Continuous Improvement program:

“As a result of their efforts, chronic absenteeism among students with disabilities decreased significantly between 2015-16 and 2016-17 … and the proportion meeting or exceeding the benchmark for reading proficiency in grade 3 increased from 8% to 17%.”

The Carnegie Foundation launched the Spotlight on Quality in Continuous Improvement program in 2017 to elevate clear and compelling examples of how the rigorous application of improvement principles, methods, processes, and tools solve educational problems. Each honoree has demonstrated quality in the enactment of improvement principles, methods, and tools applied to significant problems in education or to transform their educational systems or organizations.
