Brown University’s Swearer Center for Public Service Assumes Leadership for Carnegie’s Community Engagement Classification

At a Brown University reception, Foundation president Anthony S. Bryk celebrated the Swearer Center for Public Service’s new leadership for Carnegie’s Community Engagement Classification. The classification is a voluntary supplement to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The voluntary classification has become the leading instrument for higher education institutions to embark on a quality improvement process whereby they strengthen their students’ engagement with the larger communities of which they are a part.  The Community Engagement Classification has emerged as a vital resource for higher education institutions, growing from 76 campuses in 2008 to 361 campuses in 2015.
